When should you call a structural engineer?
Certain components of a residential building must be designed by an engineer because they fall outside the prescriptive standards of the National Building Code. At GEQ – Bâtiment Conseil, we offer a comprehensive engineering service, tailored to complex or customized projects.
Here are some common examples where engineer intervention is required:
🔹 Long spans (beams, lintels, joists)
Span exceeding the requirements of Chapter 9 of the 2015 National Building Code. Generally spans of more than 15' (4.57m)
Use of non-standard materials such as steel or engineered wood (LVL, PSL, glued laminated timber, etc.)
Heavy loads (load-bearing walls, flat roofs, spas, etc.)
