The attic is your property's first line of defense against bad weather and climate change. This space, often dark and difficult to access, requires periodic inspection to prevent possible damage that could affect the integrity of the building.
❎ Frequency of inspections
It is recommended to carry out a biannual check, i.e. twice a year:
• In winter, when cold temperatures allow you to identify problems with condensation, frost accumulation, snow, mold or poor insulation.
• In summer, to detect problems with water infiltration, mold, rotting decking or rodents.
❎ Points to watch for during winter inspection
With the cold temperatures we're currently experiencing in Quebec, it's crucial to perform a winter inspection to detect signs of apparent deficiencies. During the inspection, pay particular attention to the following:
✅ Presence of frost on the roof deck, which may indicate poor ventilation or migration of warm air from inside the house.
✅ Accumulation of snow on the insulation, which may be caused by a failure of the weather shield or other opening.
✅ Blackish traces of mold, indicating excessive humidity, which can damage the structure in the long term.
✅ Presence of water or condensation, an indicator of poor ventilation or infiltration.
❎ Prevention and corrective actions
Identifying a problem early allows for rapid intervention and reduced repair costs. Regular inspections of your attic ensure the health of your living space and protect your real estate investment.
☎️ If you notice any anomalies, do not hesitate to consult a building expert for a thorough assessment and the application of appropriate corrective measures.
